Maximilian Kiehl, a master's student at THI, began his master's thesis in 2018 in the field of materials technology in mechanical engineering under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Tetzlaff in cooperation with Prof. Dr. Graf and Prof. Dr. Scheid from UFPR. Therefore he worked for one month at UFPR in Curitiba in October 2018. THI, UFPR and UFSC have been conducting joint research in the field of material technologies since the early beginnings of AWARE in 2013.
The goal of the master thesis was the development of a wear-resistant surface coating for cast iron disc brakes by laser cladding. In the future, this process should enable the production of long-term disc brakes for automobiles. A longer service life and the reduction of brake abrasion, which reduces particle pollution, makes the disc brakes more environmentally friendly. In addition, the coating provides corrosion resistance, thus preventing film rust formation on the surface coating of the disc brakes and improving the appearance from the customer's point of view.
