THI's AWARE Center launched a strategic network with industrial and research partners in Latin America, a German-Brazilian research and networking project on the topic of second-life batteries.
Professor Sergej Diel and 25 further participants visited Brazil in October 2022, invited by DAAD to do Match Making in Rio de Janeiro.
For three days, the researchers presented their projects and exchanged their ideas with representatives from the Brazilian energy sector.

The result of the meeting is a project consortium consisting of two Brazilian universities, Universidade Federal do Amazonas, Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, the Instituto Federal de Santa Catarina as well as the German University of Duisburg-Essen and the Ingolstadt University of Applied Sciences (THI), directed by the project leader Sergej Diel from Ingolstadt Technical University.

The basic goal is to develop PV-based storage systems with second-life batteries from the automotive sector as stand-alone solutions for the Amazon region, where no electricity connections are available. Besides, further joint research projects shall be launched by exchanging scientific staff, students and professors within this network. The first joint year is funded by the Gesellschaft für internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), coordinated by DAAD.
